Waters of the Third Millennium

Round Table
Management and safeguard of underground waters in karst environments

31st march 2001

The water is one of the topics of greatest interest in this beginning of the third millennium; from a scientific to a political level, not to mention the problems related to management and distribution of waters, it represents a thoroughly discussed matter.

The problems related to water are very numerous: among them, availability of the water as a resource, its correct use and exploitation, pollution. The latter commonly derives from lack of a correct management of safeguard of the territory.

These problems are much mserious in territories geologically characterized by presence of carbonate rocks: the high vulnerability of the underground waters in karst environments, and the very easy introduction of pollutants directly into the water-bearing layers as well, with clear and dramatic consequences as regards the quality of the water, pose serious questions about the management and the control of karst territories.

In addition, it is worth to remember the very present problem of paucity of hydric resources, a consequence of both the scarse rainfalls and insufficient recharge of the water levels; this problem is very seriously felt in wide areas of Southern Italy.

And still more, the known phenomenon of intrusion by sea water, which affects wide coastal areas of the Italian territory, and in particular the Apulia region.

Aim of the round table is therefto promote the meeting of experts, technicians, administratives, speleologists and professionals, to open a constructive discussion on the above mentioned topics.

The Round Table Management and safeguard of underground waters in karst environments is part of the activities related to the 1st FilmFestival of the Documentary The Adventure of Man, held at Castellana Grotte on 29 March - 1 April 2001.

The Proceedings of the Round Table will be published, in order to make known the results obtained during the meeting and to focus the people attention on important themes concerning the environment.
